Thinclads: A Small Town 1950s Track Team and Then Some

Fred MaGill 1902
This was an era in the nation’s history and its heartland where small-town sports teams often were carried by a “band of brothers.” Girls and young women were not yet making traction in school and college sports. Fortunately, this soon would change.
In 1956, the spotlight shined on a group of boys at Elkhorn High. Virtually, every high school in Wisconsin’s Southern Lakes Conference could identify families who were central to the success of its teams. Elkhorn, it seems, had a disproportionate number of talented brothers, and one set ushered in the town’s first state championship, setting standards for decades to come. This story is replayed through a candid memoir of the times.
