In memory of
ROBERT VAN SCOTTER
In memory of our brother Robert James Van Scotter who passed away on a Tuesday evening, October 17, 2023. He was 95 and born on June 10, 1928 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.
Bob was 11 years and three months my senior but more than just a big brother. Along with Donald Eugene (1930), he served as a role model and surrogate father to his three younger brothers that also included Roger Henry (1940) and Alan John (1944).
My earliest vivid memory of Bob at age five was taking the bus from downtown Elkhorn to Milwaukee, 45 miles away, for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader AAA baseball game at Borchert Field. The home team Brewers played the St. Paul Saints. From the stop on Wisconsin Avenue, we took a cable car to the ballpark at 8th Street and Burleigh on the Old North Side. The first place Brewers took two games that beautiful summer afternoon.
Bob also was a rugged running back and tenacious defender on the Elkhorn High football team, earning All-State honorable mention honors and chosen Homecoming King by teammates.
Upon high school graduation, with a full household of five boys, Bob enlisted in the Navy. After serving two years, he enrolled in the Journalism School at Marquette University, where he was editor of the Marquette Tribune his senior year.
As sports editor with The Elkhorn Independent, Bob took memorable photos and was a great support to his younger brothers. He was beloved by the players and respected by his Southern Lakes’ peers.
